		<description>This is a great post, and I have to say with some regret that I don&#039;t get those heartfelt thanks from my kids very often. Although, I suppose we don&#039;t often make those big gestures which elicit that kind of response, or else they wouldn&#039;t be so special.

I wanted to write in defence of those &quot;reflexive&quot;, &quot;cavalier&quot; and &quot;depressing&quot; thank-yous we utter throughout the day. Far from being worthless, I think they and similar courtesies (&quot;you&#039;re welcome&quot;, &quot;excuse me&quot;) are the lubricant of society. Every &quot;thank you&quot; can&#039;t come from the bottom of my heart, but the fact that I&#039;ve chosen to say thank you is significant: it acknowledges the humanity of the person I&#039;m speaking to. Those everyday thank yous are a different thing from the intense ones, but I think they&#039;re every bit as important.</description>
