This week at Parent Central, The Star’s Andrea Gordon wrote about why kids should do chores. The article describes a pilot fundraising project called Chores for Change at the Institute of Child Study and explains the benefits of children doing chores.
Jennifer Kolari is quoted in the article, explaining that kids may do fewer chores because parents these days try to “shield … [their children] from adversity” while at the same time kids participate in more activities, creating a “time crunch [that] means working parents are often scrambling, believing they can do tasks faster themselves.” Still, Jennifer believes that many parents now “realize they may be doing more harm than good.” As Jennifer explains: ”It does take more time to teach kids how to help and instill good habits … But it also saves time in the long run.”
